Sourcing & import, China 中国

Source from China with certainty

Do you import from China, or are you considering it? I find reliable factories, check them on site and negotiate in Mandarin. You decide the product, I handle the rest, from factory to your door, so you source without costly mistakes or a language barrier.

Importing without surprises

Four things you gain when someone stands on the factory floor on your behalf.

Quality checked on site

No photos and promises, but physical inspections on the factory floor before you pay or ship. For independent quality control and lab testing I work with SGS.

Comparing on facts

I compare suppliers side by side on price, MOQ (the minimum order quantity), quality and reliability. You choose on facts, not gut feeling.

Negotiating in Mandarin

At the table in the manufacturer's own language. That earns better prices, better terms and more respect.

Import fully arranged

From factory to your warehouse: transport and customs clearance with reliable Dutch freight forwarders, and the delivery terms (EXW, FOB or DDP) negotiated sharply with the supplier.

You choose how we approach it

Join me in China or hand it all over: both routes lead to the same certainty.

Option A

I travel for you

You stay home, I represent you in China. Ideal if you want to save time without giving up certainty.

  • Factory visits and inspections on your behalf
  • Negotiation in Mandarin
  • Photos, videos and a clear advisory report
Option B

We travel together

You come along and see everything with your own eyes. I prepare the trip, translate at the table and guide you through business China.

  • Fully prepared travel programme
  • Live translation at factories and trade fairs
  • Cultural guidance, from first handshake to dinner

Where the work happens

Trade fairs, factories and negotiation tables. A selection from recent trips.

Everything around the deal, sorted too

China works differently. Travel along and you hit practical walls. I clear them out of the way, so you can focus on the deal.

Internet & VPN

Almost every European app is blocked in China: WhatsApp, Google, Gmail, Instagram. I set up a working VPN and keep you online.

Phone & reachable

A local connection and data that actually work. You stay reachable at home and we keep in touch during the trip.

Transport & Didi

Taxis can't understand you and sometimes refuse foreigners. I arrange Didi (the Chinese Uber), the metro and the route from fair to factory.

WeChat & payments

Without WeChat, Alipay or Didi you're stuck in China. I help you set them up, so paying, chatting and planning just work.

Language & culture

From the menu to the negotiation table: I translate and guide you through the etiquette, so nothing catches you off guard.

Finding factories

I know my way around 1688, Made-in-China and Alibaba (the latter stopped being the cheapest long ago) and which supplier actually manufactures itself.

Not a middleman. Your man in China.

I'm Bram van der Wielen, a sinologist trained at Leiden University. During my degree in Chinese Studies I immersed myself in the Chinese language, culture and economy, and brought my Mandarin to HSK 4 level. Since 2022 I have been doing business in China, mainly in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and I attend every edition of the Canton Fair.

China fascinates me: the technology, the rich history, the culture, and of course its position as the manufacturing centre of the world. I turn that fascination into results for my clients. I also hold a degree in business administration and am qualified in Global Procurement and Strategic Sourcing: I approach your purchasing strategically and methodically, and where useful I can advise on other aspects of your business too, such as marketing or sales. Besides Dutch and Mandarin I speak fluent English and Spanish, so international projects are no problem at all.

"My philosophy is simple: it doesn't have to be complicated. Practical, efficient and honest about what I see."

When is it worth bringing me in?

I mainly work for small and medium-sized businesses with a worked-out product idea, ideally with an existing company. And to be honest: not every import is large enough to bring in an adviser. Below you can read when it is worth it, and when it is not.

€15,000 to €20,000Purchase value from which a project starts to pay for itself
from €50,000Order size that makes a full project, including the import, comfortably worthwhile

Below that, I will say so

Under that purchase value, time and travel costs often do not outweigh the savings. You are usually better off with a wholesaler. I will tell you that plainly, even when it costs me the assignment.

Worth it the first time above all

A first introduction to doing business in China, choosing the right products and reliable factories together, and the certainty that you are not walking into an expensive mistake. If you want to build your own brand, with your own design (OEM) or an existing design under your name (ODM), this is the logical first step.

Fixed price, no commission

A traditional sourcing agent charges 3 to 10% commission on your entire order, so they have an interest in you buying more. I work for a fixed price agreed upfront, so my advice always serves your interest.

I actually travel with you

I stand on the factory floor with you or on your behalf and negotiate in Mandarin. Everything around it is covered too: internet, WeChat and payments, transport, language and culture. You focus on the deal.

Not sure whether your import is large enough? Book a free intro call without obligation and I will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Can we meet in person?+
Certainly. The introductory call by video or phone is free. If you would rather meet in person, that can be in Almere, at your own premises or somewhere else. You can expect me to come prepared: I present an advisory report with what I have been able to find out about your product and market by that point.
Do I have to travel to China myself?+
No, you don't. With Option A I travel alone and represent you fully, including photos, videos and an advisory report. If you want to come along, Option B covers the whole programme and I translate on site.
Which products can you help me with?+
From hair extensions to concrete vehicles, and from electronics to fitness equipment. The approach is always the same: sharpen the requirements, compare factories, verify on site and negotiate hard.
Can I have products made under my own brand?+
Yes, and it is often easier to arrange than people expect. Many Chinese factories work as OEM as a matter of course (your logo, your packaging, your specifications) or as ODM, where they adapt an existing design for you. It stands or falls with the selection of the manufacturer, because far from everyone offers it and the MOQ varies widely. I negotiate the MOQ, the packaging and any mould or tooling costs, and put it in writing before anything goes into production. Two examples are among the client cases: the carp fishing system was an OEM project, the concrete mixers an ODM project.
How do I know a supplier is really a factory?+
That is exactly why an on-site visit is worth so much. Many "factories" online are trading offices with a margin on top. On the factory floor I can tell within minutes whether a company actually manufactures, and in Mandarin I get answers you won't get in English.
Do you also handle the import, or only the sourcing?+
The import too. After the purchase I can arrange the rest: quality control via SGS before the final payment and shipment, transport with reliable Dutch freight forwarders, and customs clearance, import duties and VAT until the goods are with you. You have one point of contact, from factory to your door.
What is the difference between EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP?+
These are Incoterms: agreements on the point at which responsibility and costs pass from the supplier to you. Under EXW you collect the goods at the factory and arrange everything yourself, including the Chinese export declaration. Under FOB the factory delivers on board at the Chinese port; from there your own forwarder handles the sea freight. Under CIF the supplier also pays sea freight and insurance to Rotterdam, but you have little control over the carrier and the charges on arrival often turn out higher than expected. Under DDP the supplier delivers to your door including import duties: convenient, but usually with a hefty mark-up and little insight into how the import is declared. In most cases I recommend FOB with a Dutch forwarder. Which term works out cheapest depends on the product and the order, and I negotiate it as part of the price.
Do you work on commission for factories?+
No, never. I receive no commissions from suppliers and have no stake in which factory you choose. You pay me, so I advise exclusively in your interest.
How does payment work?+
You receive a fixed-price quote upfront. You pay 30% in advance and 70% on completion, once the goods have arrived at their destination. If the assignment does not include the import, completion is when I deliver my report. Travel costs are for your account and passed on at actual cost, without markup.
What if I ask you to start and the project does not go ahead?+
If you give me the go-ahead to start, that counts as an assignment, even if you say so verbally at the end of an in-person meeting. I then start preparing straight away: approaching and vetting factories, planning, and working out the technical Mandarin terms for your product. If the project does not go ahead after that, I charge the hours spent and any costs incurred, as set out in the terms and conditions. Still in doubt? Just say so, and I will only start once you confirm definitively.
What if no suitable factory is found?+
Then that's exactly what the report will say: why not, and what the alternative is. Another region, adjusted specifications, or sometimes honest advice not to proceed. Unwelcome news, but always cheaper than a wrong container.
Can you also help after the first order?+
Absolutely. Many clients bring me back for repeat inspections, new product lines or renegotiating prices. Since I attend every Canton Fair, I can simply keep visiting your supplier there.
In which languages can we work together?+
Dutch, English and Spanish, and with the factories I switch to Mandarin (HSK 4). Most clients are Dutch companies, but I have also worked for businesses from other countries, such as Peru and Ireland.

Bram van der Wielen during a factory visit in China for the carp fishing system Assessing samples of the carp fishing system with the manufacturer in China Meeting with a Chinese manufacturer at the tea table Bram van der Wielen at the fishing tackle fair in China
Client case · Fishing tackle brand

Carp fishing system

The client wanted to bring their own carp fishing system to market: a new product, so there was no existing factory to simply walk into. The question was who could actually build it, at the right quality and at a workable price. An OEM project, in other words: the design and brand belong to the client, and the factory produces to their specifications.

  1. China’s largest fishing tackle fairWalked the entire fair floor to find out who genuinely produces for carp fishing. Narrowed dozens of exhibitors down to a shortlist that could handle the system technically.
  2. Factory visitsVisited the remaining candidates on site. Looked at the machinery, the finishing and whether they actually manufacture or only resell.
  3. From design to productionSat down with the manufacturers to go through the design, negotiating specifications, materials and volumes in Mandarin.
  4. Samples and sign-offHad samples made and assessed, and put the agreements in writing before production started.

  1. Canton FairSpoke to three hair suppliers at the fair and built a longlist of 14 factories. Called six of them in Mandarin about capacity, hair origin and price build-up.
  2. Factory visitsVisited four factories in Guangzhou in two days. Compared quality per gram: pull test, cuticle direction and the actual weight per bundle.
  3. Salon testSamples from the best three factories were tested in the salon for three weeks, by the stylists themselves.
  4. Contract & inspectionFixed gram weights written into the contract, plus an AQL inspection before every shipment.

Concrete mixers

Construction company Bauner was paying top price through local intermediaries. The brief: eight 6 m³ concrete mixers plus a spare parts package, the whole project in Spanish. An ODM project: not a new design, but a proven model from the manufacturer, adapted to the client’s requirements.

  1. SpecificationsCaptured the requirements in Spanish and translated them into Chinese: drum volume, chassis, engine and certification.
  2. ComparisonCompared nine manufacturers in Hunan and Shandong on price, build quality and export experience.
  3. Factory visitsVisited three factories: assessed the welding, checked the chassis partner and did a test drive.

  2. FilteringTrading offices dropped out after probing questions in Mandarin; only real manufacturers stayed on the shortlist.
  3. Factory visitsVisited factories in Zhongshan: ran light measurements and verified the driver brand on the production line.

  1. ProgrammeScheduled six suppliers and prepared every meeting; the client sat in on each conversation.
  2. UnmaskingThe party with the best-looking website turned out to be a trading office: no in-house SMT line and evasive answers about the firmware. That was clear on site within five minutes.

  2. RenegotiationRenegotiated with the existing supplier in Mandarin using that benchmark: 35% lower tooling.
